Trump thanked company executives and called the change “a very good move,” framing it as part of his administration’s broader push for cleaner ingredients in processed foods. A Coca-Cola spokesperson responded that the Atlanta-based company “appreciates the president’s enthusiasm” and will share details on new offerings soon, but did not confirm a reformulation of its flagship drink. Coke sold in the United States has been sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup since the 1980s, whereas the company continues to use cane sugar in products made for Mexico, Europe and other markets. Trump’s announcement dovetails with the White House’s Make America Healthy Again initiative, overseen by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which urges food manufacturers to phase out artificial dyes and certain sweeteners. The Corn Refiners Association pushed back, with Chief Executive John Bode warning that substituting cane sugar for corn syrup could eliminate food-manufacturing jobs, lower farm income in the Midwest and raise sugar imports without clear nutritional benefits. Investors moved quickly: shares of Archer Daniels Midland Co., a major supplier of high-fructose corn syrup, slid about 5.4% in pre-market trading on Thursday. Coca-Cola stock was little changed. Market analysts said costs and supply-chain adjustments stemming from any large-scale switch to cane sugar remain unclear until the company provides further guidance.
