Rep. Maxine Waters on Monday accused President Donald Trump of steering the United States toward “what could be called a civil war,” citing his hard-line stance on illegal immigration and a broad crackdown on violent crime. Speaking in remarks captured on video on Aug. 11, the California Democrat said the administration’s efforts to remove undocumented immigrants and “hold criminals accountable” risk igniting nationwide unrest. “Focus those cameras on everything that’s going on because this president is trying to lead us into what could be called a civil war,” she said. The White House had not issued an immediate response to Waters’ comments late Monday. Her warning underscores the increasingly heated rhetoric surrounding the administration’s immigration and public-safety agenda.
