Investor Bill Ackman warned that their continued presence could split the centrist vote and make a Mamdani victory more likely. Adding to the field, Cuban-born biotech entrepreneur Joseph Hernandez, 52, qualified for the November ballot late last month. The head of Manhattan-based Blue Water Venture Partners has raised roughly $300,000 and is campaigning on a law-and-order platform that includes hiring 10,000 additional police officers, converting vacant office space into affordable housing and deploying artificial intelligence to improve city services. Mamdani, meanwhile, is working to broaden his appeal. In recent interviews he said voter frustration during the Trump era helped propel his campaign and reiterated support for progressive causes, including Palestinian rights. The stance has drawn sharp criticism from conservative commentators but also praise from left-leaning activists, underscoring the ideological divide that now defines the 2025 mayoral contest.
