California Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Donald Trump of attempting to undermine U.S. democracy and “rig the 2028 election in plain sight,” warning that the contest will not be free or fair if current trends continue. In a Politico Live interview posted late Wednesday, the Democrat said he is “absolutely convinced there won’t be an election in 2028” if Trump has his way and called the former president “the most destructive and damaging individual in my lifetime.” Newsom asserted that Trump “doesn’t believe in free and fair elections” and cited the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol as evidence the president tried to overturn the 2024 outcome. “Were you there? Jan. 6,” he said, arguing that the events showed Trump’s willingness to subvert electoral norms. The governor’s remarks add to a growing chorus of Democratic criticism of Trump’s handling of democratic institutions as his administration prepares for the 2028 race. The White House did not immediately respond to the comments.
