Pennsylvania State Treasurer Stacy Garrity formally launched her campaign for governor on 18 August, setting up a 2026 contest with Democratic incumbent Josh Shapiro. Garrity, a two-term Republican who served 30 years in the Army Reserve, said she will seek her party’s nomination in the 19 May 2026 primary. Garrity framed her bid as a challenge to what she called Shapiro’s shortcomings on energy, education and job creation, arguing that the state should expand natural-gas development and adopt broader school-choice policies. She enters the race with a record of statewide victories, having unseated an incumbent treasurer in 2020 and winning re-election by 6.3 percentage points in 2024. Shapiro, elected governor in 2022 after two terms as attorney general, is expected to seek a second four-year term in the 3 November 2026 general election. Pennsylvania remains one of the nation’s most closely watched swing states, and the contest is likely to draw significant national attention and spending from both parties.
