A new Echelon Insights survey of registered voters conducted Aug. 14-18 shows former Vice President Kamala Harris maintaining a modest lead in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary with 26% support, unchanged from the firm’s April polling. California Governor Gavin Newsom continues to gain ground, climbing three points to 13% and tripling his share since the spring. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg follows at 11%, while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stands at 6% and Sen. Cory Booker slips to 5%. Rising newcomer Rep. Jasmine Crockett registers 3%, up two points. Harris’ advantage widens among Black Democratic voters, where she commands 35% support compared with 11% for Crockett and 8% for Newsom, according to the poll’s 96-respondent subsample. Buttigieg records no measurable backing in that demographic, underscoring the former vice president’s continued strength with a key party constituency even as overall enthusiasm for the field remains diffuse. On the Republican side, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance leads the pack with 43%, one point below his previous showing. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—who formally switched parties earlier this year—surges into second place at 9%, level with former Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Senator Marco Rubio draws 6%, followed by former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley at 4%, while other potential contenders poll in the low single digits. The poll highlights the fluid nature of both 2028 nomination contests, with front-runners holding only pluralities and sizeable blocs of voters still undecided more than two years before the Iowa caucuses.

Well, the silver lining for Buttigieg is that his support among Black voters has apparently stopped falling. 🤷♂️ https://t.co/emJ24FuB64
