The U.S. Supreme Court released its October and November argument calendars, slotting a closely watched redistricting dispute, Louisiana v. Callais, for re-argument on Oct. 15. The case asks whether Louisiana’s creation of a second majority-Black congressional district in its 2024 map unconstitutionally relied on race and, by extension, whether the application of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act conflicts with the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments. A ruling could reshape how states draw majority-minority districts nationwide ahead of the 2026 mid-term elections. The calendar also confirms hearings on several other election-related matters, including Bost v. Illinois Board of Elections on Oct. 8, which tests the standing of Representative Mike Bost and two presidential electors to challenge Illinois mail-ballot rules. On the same Oct. 15 docket is Case v. Montana, a Fourth Amendment dispute over warrantless home entry, underscoring the term’s broad constitutional sweep. The Supreme Court’s scheduling comes as lower-court litigation over Louisiana maps intensifies. On Aug. 14 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed a district court’s finding that the state’s legislative maps violate Section 2 by diluting Black voting strength (Nairne v. Landry), rejecting Louisiana’s bid to declare the provision unconstitutional. The back-to-back developments place Louisiana’s redistricting plans—and the durability of Section 2—squarely before the judiciary at multiple levels.
