The European Commission on 28 August proposed a pair of tariff-cutting measures intended to implement a pending EU-U.S. trade accord and secure relief for the bloc’s carmakers. Under the plan, Brussels would scrap duties on U.S. industrial goods and grant improved market access for American seafood and other non-sensitive farm products while extending an existing tariff-free arrangement for lobster. In exchange, the Commission wants Washington to lift the 15 percent tariff it currently applies to EU-built passenger vehicles and components, with the relief applied retroactively to 1 August. The proposals now go to EU member states for approval and would take effect once the United States issues reciprocal relief.
