President Donald Trump will meet with his trade advisers later this week to decide country-specific tariff rates, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said on Monday. The administration intends to impose duties on nations that fail to reach agreements with Washington before a 9 July deadline, although the president has indicated he could shorten or extend the timetable depending on the pace of negotiations. Trump foreshadowed the move last Thursday, warning that tariffs will rise for “countries ripping us off” and acknowledging that some governments “will be disappointed” by the new trade regime. For nations that do not engage, the White House is prepared to unilaterally set rates, Leavitt added. The deliberations come as a 90-day reprieve on reciprocal tariffs—granted in April to 57 trading partners other than China—expires on 8 July. While the administration has already struck a tariff deal with the United Kingdom, most other economies have yet to secure exemptions, leaving the prospect of higher duties unless further concessions on market access and non-tariff barriers are reached.
