The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has scheduled its Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to meet on Sept. 18–19 to consider updates to the nation’s routine vaccine recommendations. According to a Federal Register notice, the panel will review data on shots for COVID-19, hepatitis B, measles-mumps-rubella-varicella and respiratory syncytial virus. The session will be only the second for the reconstituted seven-member ACIP since Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed all 17 previous advisers earlier this year. At its first meeting, the new panel expressed skepticism about the breadth of existing COVID-19 recommendations after the Food and Drug Administration narrowed booster eligibility to people 65 and older or younger adults at high risk. The timing comes amid turmoil at the CDC. Newly confirmed Director Susan Monarez was ousted by the White House last week and is contesting her removal, prompting the resignation of three senior officials. In the absence of a confirmed director, any recommendations adopted by ACIP would be endorsed directly by Secretary Kennedy, raising the prospect of further changes to the availability of COVID vaccines for children, pregnant women and healthy adults under 65.
