Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr told the House Oversight Committee in a closed-door deposition on 19 August that he never saw evidence implicating President Donald Trump in the crimes of financier Jeffrey Epstein, according to Committee Chairman James Comer. Barr, who led the Justice Department when Epstein died in 2019, also said he was unaware of any so-called Epstein âclient list.â His testimony opened the committeeâs bipartisan review of how federal authorities handled the case; subpoenas have also been issued to Bill and Hillary Clinton, former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller, and several former attorneys general. Separately, the Justice Department on 22 August delivered 33,295 pages of Epstein-related materials to Congress under subpoena. Democrats on the committee, including Ranking Member Robert Garcia and Rep. Summer Lee, said an initial review showed that 97 percent of the trove consisted of previously public records, with fewer than 1,000 pages of newly disclosed flight-log data from 2000-14. Garcia said the limited disclosure âraises more questions than answers,â while Republicans said more document releases are forthcoming after victim identities are redacted. The department also released a transcript of a July interview with Epsteinâs convicted accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence. In the interview Maxwell said she never witnessed wrongdoing by Trump and called him âa gentleman.â The family of Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre condemned the interview as an attempt by Maxwell to rewrite history and accused the Justice Department of giving her a platform without adequate scrutiny.
