Ghislaine Maxwell on Tuesday asked a Manhattan federal judge to reject the Justice Department’s request to unseal transcripts of the grand-jury proceedings that led to her 2020 indictment alongside the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. In a nine-page filing, her lawyers said the disclosure of “untested, hearsay-laden” testimony would cause severe and irreversible reputational harm and could undermine her bid for a retrial, now pending review by the U.S. Supreme Court. Maxwell, 63, is serving a 20-year sentence after a 2021 conviction for recruiting and grooming underage girls for Epstein. She contends she has never been allowed to examine the grand-jury record the government now seeks to make public. The Justice Department told the court that most of the information is already in the public domain and noted that only an FBI agent and an NYPD detective testified before the panel. The unsealing effort, pending before U.S. District Judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer, was initiated after President Donald Trump directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to pursue broader transparency on the Epstein files. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche interviewed Maxwell over two days last month, and administration officials are debating whether to release the audio and transcript of that session. While Epstein’s estate has taken no position, several victims—including Annie Farmer—have urged the court to open the records, saying full disclosure would advance accountability provided that victims’ identities are protected. The judges have not indicated when they will rule on the competing requests.
