Salvadoran migrant Kilmar Abrego García was released on Friday from the Putnam County Jail in Cookeville, Tennessee, after a federal magistrate judge concluded he poses neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community. Under the release order, affirmed last month by U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw, Abrego García must travel directly to Maryland, live under the supervision of his brother, submit to electronic monitoring and report to federal pre-trial services by Monday morning. Abrego García became a high-profile symbol of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown after he was deported to El Salvador on 15 March despite a 2019 court ruling that barred his removal there. A federal judge later called the deportation an “administrative error” and ordered the government to facilitate his return, which occurred on 6 June. Upon arrival he was indicted in Tennessee on conspiracy and transportation counts alleging he helped move undocumented migrants for profit. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for January 2027. His newfound freedom may be short-lived. Attorneys said the Department of Homeland Security emailed them hours after the release, stating that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement may deport Abrego García to Uganda “no earlier than 72 hours from now” and instructing him to report to an ICE office in Baltimore on Monday. A separate order from U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis requires the government to give three days’ notice before removing him to any third country, giving defense lawyers time to seek an injunction. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the administration will continue efforts to expel Abrego García, calling him an immigration violator who must face justice.
