Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) files legislation to give a $600 rebate check to Americans as a result of tariff revenue
BREAKING: Senator Josh Hawley has filed legislation to give a $600 rebate check to Americans as a result of tariff revenue.
Sen. Josh Hawley on Monday introduced legislation that would use federal tariff revenue to send rebate checks of at least $600 to every eligible adult and dependent child in the United States. The proposal establishes a refundable tax credit, with payments funded by duties the government collects on imported goods. The credit would phase out gradually—by 5%—for individual filers earning more than $75,000, heads of household above $112,500 and joint filers above $150,000. Larger rebates would be issued if tariff receipts exceed projections. Hawley’s initiative follows President Donald Trump’s recent remark that the administration is “thinking about a little rebate” from tariffs, which the Treasury Department says have generated roughly $100 billion so far and could reach $300 billion a year. The Tax Foundation projects the levies could raise $2.5 trillion over the next decade, but economists caution that injecting additional cash into households could add to inflationary pressures. The bill must clear both chambers of Congress before any payments are sent.
