On July 1, 2025, a wide array of new laws took effect across several U.S. states, notably Florida, California, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Florida implemented nearly 150 new laws, including social media restrictions for children, prohibitions on harassing first responders, changes to school policies such as phone bans, adjusted school start times, and expanded charter school regulations. The state also introduced new driving laws addressing speeding, DMV procedures, and high-occupancy vehicle tolls, as well as new crimes and harsher penalties affecting law enforcement. California enacted several new laws, including a 2-cent-per-gallon gas tax increase approved by voters, contributing to the state's already highest-in-country gas prices. Additional changes in California impact to-go drink policies and travel plans. Virginia introduced dozens of new laws affecting workplace accountability, road safety—including a new requirement for adults to wear seatbelts in the back seat—education, and digital protections for children. Maryland's new laws cover education, digital privacy, housing, healthcare, infrastructure, and recreational marijuana. The District of Columbia and surrounding DMV area also saw multiple new laws take effect starting July 1. Across these states, the legislative changes reflect a broad focus on public safety, education reform, digital privacy, and transportation regulations.
