Law enforcement agencies across multiple U.S. states conducted extensive operations leading up to and during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, resulting in the seizure of tens of thousands of pounds of illegal fireworks and numerous arrests related to impaired driving. In California, authorities confiscated large quantities of illegal fireworks, including 10,000 pounds in Phelan, 9,300 pounds in West Covina, 1,648 pounds in San Francisco from a stolen U-Haul truck, and over 2,000 pounds in Pueblo. San Bernardino County officials seized 900 pounds during the celebrations, while Alameda County charged a man with possession of 385 pounds of illegal fireworks sold via Facebook. In Nevada, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) and partner agencies confiscated approximately 8,888 pounds of illegal fireworks and issued 473 citations, made 68 DUI arrests, and seven other arrests during a coordinated “DUI Super Blitz” over the holiday weekend. The blitz involved multiple law enforcement agencies including Henderson Police, Boulder City Police, and Nevada State Police. Georgia reported more than 400 DUI arrests, 203 crashes, and seven fatalities during the holiday travel period. Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) reported 10 deaths and 400 impairment-related arrests over the weekend. Additionally, in France, police in Pontault-Combault seized 628 kilograms of fireworks linked to illegal trafficking. Authorities in California are also preparing to impose heavy fines on individuals caught with illegal fireworks through drone surveillance. Overall, these coordinated efforts highlight ongoing concerns about public safety related to illegal fireworks and impaired driving during the holiday period.
