OpenAI’s current and former employees are in early discussions to sell roughly $6 billion of their shares to an investor group that includes SoftBank Group Corp., Thrive Capital and Dragoneer Investment Group, according to people familiar with the talks. The secondary transaction would value the ChatGPT developer at about $500 billion. The deal, still subject to change, is separate from OpenAI’s ongoing primary fundraising, in which SoftBank has committed to lead a $40 billion round valuing the company at about $300 billion. If completed at the mooted price, the tender offer would push OpenAI past SpaceX to become the world’s most valuable closely held startup. OpenAI’s valuation has climbed rapidly since the late-2022 debut of ChatGPT. The company last month announced its GPT-5 large-language model and disclosed it had secured $8.3 billion of the planned $40 billion primary round, underscoring investor demand for generative-AI assets.
