Venezuela and the United States have completed a large-scale prisoner swap involving detainees held in El Salvador and Venezuela. Approximately 252 Venezuelan migrants who had been imprisoned in El Salvador, many for several months, were repatriated to Venezuela. In exchange, Venezuela released ten American citizens and residents, along with around 80 political prisoners. The swap also included a Mexican national accused of triple murder in Spain, who was freed and returned to the US. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, confirmed the exchange and noted that many of the freed Americans reported experiencing torture and harsh conditions while detained in Venezuela. The US government has called for the continued release of political prisoners in Venezuela, condemning arbitrary detentions and repression under President Nicolás Maduro. The prisoner exchange marks a notable development in ongoing diplomatic talks between Caracas and Washington, with key negotiators from the US playing a central role in facilitating the agreement.
