Sudan is facing a severe cholera outbreak, particularly in the Darfur region, where the epidemic has caused at least 271 deaths and infected over 6,600 people recently. Over the past year, Sudan has recorded more than 65,000 cholera cases, with around 32,000 cases and approximately 426 deaths occurring in 2025 alone. The crisis is exacerbated by ongoing civil war, which has disrupted access to water, healthcare, and humanitarian aid, especially in overcrowded displacement camps in Darfur. Humanitarian organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and UNICEF, have issued warnings about the rapidly spreading disease and its threat to vulnerable populations, including children. The United States, United Nations, and allied countries have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan and have called for humanitarian ceasefires to facilitate aid delivery. The outbreak in Sudan is part of a broader regional health challenge, with neighboring Chad also reporting a cholera epidemic with 642 cases and 39 deaths in Ouaddaï.
