Islamic State-linked Allied Democratic Forces fighters attacked a Catholic church in Komanda, in Congo’s northeastern Ituri province, in the early hours of Sunday, city officials said. Worshippers were attending an overnight mass when the armed men stormed the building, opening fire and using machetes against congregants inside and outside the church. Local administrator Jean Kato told Reuters that at least 38 people were killed and 15 wounded, while several others remain missing. Radio France Internationale, citing provincial authorities, put the death toll at about 40, suggesting the number could rise as searches continue. The United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Congo condemned the assault, which comes amid a resurgence of violence in Ituri and neighbouring North Kivu provinces. The ADF, which has pledged allegiance to Islamic State, has stepped up attacks on civilians despite joint Congolese and regional military operations aimed at dismantling the group.
