Sudan's Darfur region is experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis marked by violence and a worsening cholera outbreak. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), reportedly armed by the United Arab Emirates, attacked the Abu Shouk refugee camp near el-Fasher in North Darfur, killing at least 40 civilians, including children and a pregnant woman, and injuring 13 others. The camp houses approximately 200,000 displaced people. Concurrently, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has reported the worst cholera outbreak in Sudan in years, with at least 40 deaths recorded in a single week. The outbreak is spreading rapidly across three states, exacerbated by ongoing conflict that has disrupted access to clean water, healthcare, and humanitarian aid. UNICEF has highlighted cholera as a significant threat to children and families amid the conflict. As of mid-August 2025, the number of cholera cases in Darfur has risen to 6,603 with 271 deaths. The combined effects of armed conflict, displacement, famine, and disease are creating one of the most critical humanitarian emergencies in the region.
