U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he does not believe a formal ceasefire is necessary to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict, arguing he has brokered six peace agreements this year without first halting hostilities. “I don’t think you need a ceasefire … in the six wars that I settled this year, they were all at war. I didn’t do any ceasefires,” Trump told reporters during the open portion of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington. The remark appears to soften Trump’s stance from last week, when he warned of “very severe consequences” for Russian President Vladimir Putin if Moscow did not agree to an immediate truce. Trump added on Monday that he still supports a settlement that would “stop killing people immediately” but maintained that negotiations can progress while combat continues.
