The U.S. Department of Transportation said Wednesday it will reclaim management of Washington, D.C.’s Union Station, removing day-to-day control from Amtrak and the nonprofit Union Station Redevelopment Corporation. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the 118-year-old landmark “dilapidated” and said stronger federal oversight is needed to address crime, homelessness and deferred maintenance at the nation’s second-busiest Amtrak station. USDOT owns the station through the Federal Railroad Administration but has gradually ceded operating authority through long-term leases. Duffy said the department is renegotiating those agreements and expects a formal order restoring full federal control in September. Planned work includes repairs to elevators, lighting and the roof, along with expanded security measures aimed at attracting new tenants and private capital. The move deepens President Donald Trump’s recent assertive posture toward the capital. Earlier this month the White House placed the Metropolitan Police Department under temporary federal supervision and deployed hundreds of National Guard troops, some of whom now patrol Union Station. Administration officials argue the measures are necessary to reduce violent crime; city leaders have contested the federal intervention. Union Station handled roughly 5.6 million intercity rail passengers last year and links Amtrak, the Washington Metro and multiple bus lines. The announcement coincided with Amtrak’s unveiling of its NextGen Acela fleet, trains that can reach 160 mph on limited sections of the Northeast Corridor. USDOT is also reshaping other marquee rail projects, having shifted oversight of New York’s $7 billion Penn Station reconstruction to Amtrak earlier this year.
