The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has reported a surge in mpox cases across several African countries. In Guinea, new suspected mpox cases increased by 468% and confirmed cases rose by 89% in epidemiological week 30, with clades 2a and 2b identified among confirmed cases. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) also experienced a rise in suspected and confirmed mpox cases during epidemiological week 29, with new health zones affected. Clade 2b was detected in Kinshasa, linked to travel history to West Africa. Among 27 countries that reported mpox cases over the past two years, 13 have reported new cases in the past week. Conversely, Liberia saw a decline in new suspected mpox cases. Additionally, the DRC is facing a cholera outbreak with 335 suspected cases, 8 confirmed cases, and 29 deaths, resulting in a case fatality rate of 8.5%.
