The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to experience substantial pressure on its health system due to the Mpox outbreak, with 12,208 suspected cases and 22 deaths reported between January 1 and May 31, 2025. This accounts for more than half of the Mpox cases reported in Africa this year. Meanwhile, Guinea has seen a sharp increase in Mpox cases, with suspected cases rising by 62% and confirmed cases more than doubling from 25 to 51 in the last week, totaling over 200 cases since the virus was first detected. Sierra Leone has also reported increases in both suspected and confirmed Mpox cases, along with a rise in deaths during epidemiological week 26. Conversely, Uganda has experienced a decline in Mpox cases but reported three deaths in epidemiological week 27. In addition to Mpox, the DRC is facing a cholera outbreak, with cases and deaths rising in epidemiological week 27, particularly in Kinshasa, which is identified as the biggest threat. The country is also dealing with a measles epidemic, further compounding the public health challenges.
