South Africa is advancing its green hydrogen sector as a strategic response to economic challenges and unreliable electricity supply. President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized the continent's abundant renewable resources, including solar irradiance, wind, and hydropower, positioning Africa as a key player in the global green hydrogen market. The Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance, comprising countries such as Egypt, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa, has announced over 52 large-scale projects. The alliance projects that the green hydrogen industry could generate between 2 million and 4 million jobs by 2050. Global demand for green hydrogen is expected to increase sevenfold by 2050, creating significant investment opportunities. South Africa aims to become a world-class green hydrogen production hub, leveraging its mineral resources and renewable energy potential to decarbonize heavy industries, stimulate investment, and promote inclusive growth across borders.
