Meta Platforms Inc. is preparing to restructure its artificial-intelligence operations again, according to people familiar with the plans. The company intends to split Meta Superintelligence Labs into four dedicated units covering fundamental research, a new superintelligence initiative, consumer products such as the Meta AI assistant, and supporting infrastructure. Management aims to announce the changes on Tuesday. A company memo viewed by Bloomberg names the leaders of each unit: Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang will run the still-unnamed “TBD Lab” focused on superintelligence; computer-vision pioneer Robert Fergus will oversee the Fundamental AI Research team; former GitHub chief executive Nat Friedman will direct product development; and Aparna Ramani will head infrastructure. While thousands of engineers will be reassigned, Meta is also weighing a reduction in overall headcount, and several senior executives are expected to depart. The overhaul follows an aggressive hiring spree in which Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg committed billions of dollars—and, in some cases, nine-figure compensation packages—to lure researchers from rivals such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind. Meta is simultaneously evaluating whether to incorporate external AI models into its products, signalling a rare shift away from relying solely on in-house technology.
