OpenAI said its ChatGPT platform is on track to reach roughly 700 million weekly active users this week, up from 500 million at the end of March and quadruple the level recorded a year ago. The figure, disclosed by ChatGPT vice-president Nick Turley and reported by CNBC and TechCrunch, spans all versions of the service, including free, Plus, Enterprise, Team and education plans. Corporate adoption is accelerating alongside consumer use. Paying business customers have climbed to about 5 million, compared with 3 million in June, while daily user messages now exceed 3 billion, according to the company. Sensor Tower data cited by TechCrunch show users spend an average of 16 minutes a day on the app and engage with it more than 12 days each month. The usage milestone follows an $8.3 billion funding round that valued OpenAI at roughly $300 billion and lifted its annual recurring revenue to about $13 billion, up from $10 billion in June. Management has said revenue could top $20 billion by year-end as enterprises integrate generative-AI tools more deeply into workflows. OpenAI’s growth comes ahead of an anticipated launch of GPT-5, the company’s next-generation language model. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman and other executives have teased an unveiling in the coming days, suggesting a busy week for the San Francisco-based AI developer as it seeks to maintain momentum against rivals such as Google, Anthropic and xAI.
