OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile application has generated an estimated $2 billion in global consumer spending since its May 2023 debut on iOS and Android, according to new data from app-intelligence firm Appfigures. The analysis shows the app is averaging $2.91 in spending per download across roughly 690 million installs, underscoring users’ willingness to pay for the generative-AI service on mobile devices. Momentum has accelerated sharply this year. Between January and July 2025, consumers spent $1.35 billion on the ChatGPT app, a 673% increase from the same period in 2024 and equivalent to about $193 million a month. The United States accounts for 38% of lifetime revenue, followed by Germany at 5.3%, while India leads on installs with nearly 14% of the total. The numbers widen the gap between ChatGPT and rival chatbots. xAI’s Grok has taken in roughly $25.6 million in 2025, while Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot together remain far below ChatGPT’s lifetime total—collectively amounting to about one-thirtieth of OpenAI’s mobile take. The figures highlight ChatGPT’s continued dominance in the consumer market even as competitors add standalone apps and new features.
