OpenAI has launched Operator, an AI agent designed to automate online tasks such as making purchases, booking tickets, and filling out forms. Available as a research preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers at $200 per month, Operator operates within a browser-like environment in ChatGPT. It uses a model called Computer-Using Agent (CUA) to interact with web elements, enabling it to perform multi-step tasks. However, early users report that the system requires significant human intervention and supervision, limiting its autonomy. Operator has shown promise in simple tasks but struggles with more complex operations, such as managing calendars or creating spreadsheets. It achieved an 87 percent success rate on the WebVoyager benchmark but only 38.1 percent on the OSWorld benchmark. Partners like Uber, DoorDash, Priceline, StubHub, Instacart, and eBay are exploring its potential. OpenAI acknowledges the need for improvements, including addressing limitations with complex interfaces, and plans to expand Operator's availability and capabilities. The launch has been seen as a step toward the "Agentic Commerce Era," where AI agents could transform digital commerce.
