Argentine President Javier Milei was hustled away by security on Wednesday after protesters hurled rocks, bottles and other objects at his open-top caravan in Lomas de Zamora, a populous suburb south of Buenos Aires. Witnesses saw at least one stone strike the hood of the pickup truck in which the president was standing beside his sister and chief of staff Karina Milei and congressional candidate José Luis Espert. Government spokesman Manuel Adorni said no one was injured, while police briefly detained two people as scuffles erupted between supporters and opponents in the crowd. Security Minister Patricia Bullrich blamed Peronist activists for organising the attack and said her department had identified several suspects and was weighing criminal complaints. The district is a traditional stronghold of the Peronist opposition, which hopes to curb Milei’s austere economic programme in provincial elections on 7 September and national mid-terms on 26 October. The clash came hours after Milei publicly denied leaked audio recordings that allege a kickback scheme in the disability agency involving Karina Milei and former agency head Diego Spagnuolo. "Everything he says is a lie; we will prove it in court," the president told reporters before the incident. Investor anxiety over the scandal earlier pushed Argentina’s country-risk spread to 829 basis points, its highest in three months.
