U.S. President Donald Trump said negotiations aimed at ending the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan appear to be approaching a “successful conclusion.” Speaking at the Oval Office during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday, Trump told reporters that the two South Caucasus neighbors “look like” they will soon finalize a peace deal. Trump’s remarks follow a series of diplomatic contacts between Baku and Yerevan. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in the United Arab Emirates last week and agreed to press ahead with bilateral talks. On March 13 the two sides announced they had reached consensus on all 17 articles of a draft peace treaty, though the document has yet to be signed. Armenia and Azerbaijan have been negotiating a comprehensive agreement since the 2020 war that ended with a Russian-brokered cease-fire restoring much of Azerbaijan’s control over Nagorno-Karabakh. Full normalization would include demarcating the border, reopening transport routes and establishing diplomatic relations. A finalized accord could reshape security and trade corridors across the South Caucasus.
