Trump: I hope the war between Israel and Iran is over, and I would like to lift the sanctions on Tehran at the appropriate time
Trump said that he hoped the war with Israel and Iran is over, he told a journalist at the White House. https://t.co/2LpsawzH3m
U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington believes the 12-day war between Iran and Israel has ended, telling reporters at the NATO summit in The Hague on 25 June, “We think it’s over. I don’t think they’re going to be going back at each other.” Trump argued that U.S.-supported strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities had pushed the two sides toward a cease-fire. Iran’s Health Ministry has put the conflict’s toll at 627 dead and 4,870 wounded, while the U.S.-based rights network HRANA reports more than 1,000 fatalities. Trump compared the scale of the strikes on Iran’s atomic sites to the 1945 bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and insisted Tehran’s nuclear capacity had been eliminated, a claim independent analysts have not verified. Meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on 7-8 July, the president reiterated that he hopes hostilities are finished and said Iran “wants to meet and make peace.” He added that he would like to lift U.S. sanctions on Tehran “at the appropriate time” and hinted at new negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme. Neither Tehran nor Jerusalem has formally confirmed a permanent cessation of hostilities, and details of any cease-fire arrangement remain undisclosed. U.S. officials have not announced a timeline for possible sanctions relief or for the prospective nuclear talks.
