A juvenile court in Berlin has handed an 18-month suspended sentence to a 16-year-old Syrian national for helping to plan a foiled attack on Taylor Swift’s sold-out concerts in Vienna last year. The defendant, identified only as Mohamed A. under German privacy rules, was 14 at the time of the offences. Judges found that the teenager, radicalised online by Islamic State propaganda, translated bomb-making instructions from Arabic, shared the material with an Austrian accomplice and facilitated contact with an IS operative. He confessed to the charges of preparing a serious act of violence and supporting a terrorist organisation abroad. The concerts, scheduled for 7 August 2024 at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, were cancelled after a CIA tip prompted Austrian and German authorities to dismantle the plot. Three other suspects—also minors at the time—remain in Austrian custody, while the investigation into the alleged ringleader, 20-year-old Austrian citizen Beran A., continues. Under the suspended sentence, Mohamed A. must meet court-imposed conditions to avoid jail. Both prosecution and defence may still appeal the verdict.
