A 24-year-old Algerian man survived after clinging to the outside of an ÖBB Railjet high-speed train that pulled out of Sankt Pölten station in Lower Austria on Saturday evening while he was taking a cigarette break. According to Austrian Federal Railways spokesman Herbert Hofer, the man leapt into the gap between two carriages as the Zurich-to-Vienna service began to depart, then banged on windows to alert crew members. The conductor triggered the emergency brake, allowing staff to bring the passenger on board. The incident delayed the train’s arrival at Vienna’s Meidling station by seven minutes, where police took the man into custody for questioning. “It is irresponsible; this kind of thing usually ends up with someone dying,” Hofer said, noting a similar case in Germany earlier this year. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew, and ÖBB said its internal investigation will examine station safety procedures.
