Texas regulators have granted Tesla Robotaxi LLC a transportation-network-company permit, clearing the way for the electric-vehicle maker to operate a full ride-hailing service across the state with its fleet of autonomous ‘robotaxi’ vehicles. The license, posted Friday on the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation’s website, is valid until Aug. 6, 2026 and dovetails with statewide autonomous-vehicle rules that take effect on Sept. 1. Those regulations require camera-based monitoring and insurance coverage but do not mandate a safety driver in the car. The approval enables Tesla to expand beyond its invitation-only pilot in Austin, where Model Y sport-utility vehicles equipped with the company’s latest automated-driving software have been ferrying select passengers since June. The broader rollout sets up direct competition with incumbent ride-hailing providers Uber and Lyft. Investors welcomed the development, sending Tesla shares up as much as 3.8% in New York trading.
