Brazil’s Federal Police on Wednesday formally indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and his son, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, on suspicion of obstructing justice in the criminal case that examines the family’s alleged role in a 2024 coup attempt. Investigators say Eduardo lobbied U.S. officials to impose sanctions on members of Brazil’s Supreme Court and law-enforcement agencies in order to derail proceedings against his father. The police report, delivered to Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes and the Prosecutor-General’s Office, cites possible crimes of coercion and violent abolition of the democratic state. The 134-page dossier also details R$2 million that Eduardo purportedly received from his father and moved through currency operations to conceal its origin. According to extracts recovered from the former president’s phone, Jair Bolsonaro discussed a plan to flee Brazil and seek political asylum from Argentine President Javier Milei, violating court-ordered restrictions that bar him from coordinating with allies or leaving the country. Prosecutors will now decide whether to file formal charges with the Supreme Court. Jair Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since 4 August for breaching prior social-media bans tied to the same coup investigation; Eduardo has remained in the United States since March. Neither of the Bolsonaros has commented publicly on Wednesday’s indictment.
