Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced that Brazil will use all available measures, including filing a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), to defend its national interests against the United States' planned tariffs on Brazilian goods. The US has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Brazilian imports, prompting Brazil to request consultations at the WTO to challenge these trade levies. Lula declined direct talks with US President Donald Trump, describing such negotiations as potentially humiliating and stating that the US shows no interest in dialogue. Instead, Lula plans to coordinate a joint response with BRICS allies, including India and China, emphasizing multilateralism and cooperation. He also intends to implement a new policy treating strategic minerals as a matter of national sovereignty, aiming to avoid past mistakes of exporting important minerals without domestic processing. Despite the tariffs, Lula ruled out retaliatory tariffs on US goods but pledged to provide aid to Brazilian firms affected by the duties. Lula has engaged in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen cooperation in trade, technology, energy, defense, agriculture, health, and people-to-people relations, reaffirming their commitment to defend the multilateral trade system amid the US tariff measures.
