Cruzeiro goalkeeper Cássio Ramos said he was suffering from “deep depression” during his final months at Corinthians and lacked the strength to help the São Paulo club, prompting his decision to leave after a 12-year spell and more than 700 appearances. Speaking on a club podcast on 2 July, the 37-year-old described visible signs of the illness—“sunken eyes, a different expression”—and said professional therapy and the support of Cruzeiro’s staff had been critical to his recovery. Cássio credited Cruzeiro owner Pedrinho and coach Leonardo Jardim for maintaining confidence in him through early struggles in Belo Horizonte and for ensuring continued access to psychological care. Now in improved form, the goalkeeper has played 26 matches in 2025 as Cruzeiro sits second in Brazil’s Série A on 24 points, level with leaders Flamengo. The disclosure adds to the growing number of elite athletes speaking publicly about mental-health challenges and comes as Brazilian clubs increase investment in psychological services. Cruzeiro did not comment beyond the podcast, while Corinthians thanked their former captain for his candour.
