Brazilian football mourned the death of former defender Wagner Basílio, who died on Tuesday, 15 July, in São Paulo from complications related to chronic kidney failure. He was 65 and had undergone a kidney transplant in 2021 after battling renal problems since 2019. Basílio was developed by Corinthians and played 258 matches for the club, helping the side win the Campeonato Paulista in 1979, 1982 and 1983. He moved to arch-rival São Paulo in 1986 and cemented his place in club folklore by converting the final penalty that sealed the team’s 1986 Campeonato Brasileiro title; he added the Paulista crown the following year. The centre-back later joined Bahia, where he made 170 appearances, reached the national semi-finals in 1990 and lifted the Campeonato Baiano in 1991 before retiring in 1992. Corinthians, São Paulo and Bahia issued statements expressing condolences and praising his contribution to their histories.
