Brazilian singer-songwriter Angela Ro Ro remains in the intensive-care unit of Hospital Silvestre in Rio de Janeiro after complications from a pulmonary infection and renal crisis led to her intubation on 17 June. According to her legal representative, Carlos Eduardo Campista de Lyrio, the 75-year-old artist was taken off sedation this week and is beginning to breathe without mechanical assistance, though she is still in delicate condition and visits are being tightly restricted. Doctors performed a tracheostomy on 6 July to secure Ro Ro’s airway, leaving her temporarily without the use of her distinctive voice. Medical staff say she will require a course of vocal rehabilitation before she can resume performances, with no forecast for hospital discharge yet. The prolonged recovery has highlighted the singer’s financial vulnerability. Lyrio told local media that Ro Ro has no pension and now relies almost exclusively on royalties of roughly R$800 a month from music-streaming platforms. He is appealing for donations to help cover treatment and rehabilitation costs, citing a PIX key registered to the artist’s full name, Angela Maria Diniz Gonçalves.
