The U.S. dollar weakened against the Brazilian real on Friday, poised to end the week lower, as investors reacted positively to a relief in trade tensions between the United States and China, while also digesting stronger-than-expected U.S. employment data. The dólar à vista fell 0.59% to R$5,6430, with a weekly decline of 0.83%. The dollar index, which measures the U.S. dollar against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.31% to 99.832. The U.S. dollar also declined against other currencies such as the South African rand and the Chilean peso. In the B3, the first maturity dollar futures contract was down 0.31% at R$5,686. China's Ministry of Commerce announced it is evaluating a U.S. offer to discuss tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump, although it warned against using 'extortion and coercion.' This statement alleviated some uncertainty that had built up over the week regarding the trade relationship between the two countries. The U.S. had imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese products, while China implemented a 125% tariff on U.S. imports. The U.S. employment report for April showed the creation of 177,000 jobs, surpassing the Reuters poll estimate of 130,000 jobs. This led traders to slightly reduce their bets on Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year, now expecting a total of 87 basis points in reductions, down from 90 basis points before the employment data was released. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose 4 basis points to 4.273%.
