Arsenal have signed Canada forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool for £1 million, making the 20-year-old the first female footballer to command a seven-figure transfer fee. The north London club confirmed the deal on 17 July, saying Smith has agreed a four-year contract and will wear the No. 15 shirt. The fee eclipses the £900,000 Chelsea paid San Diego Wave for U.S. defender Naomi Girma in January and is almost five times the £210,000 Liverpool spent to bring Smith from Sporting Lisbon last year. At roughly $1.34 million, the move marks a new high-water mark for spending in the rapidly growing women’s transfer market. Smith scored nine goals in all competitions during her debut Women’s Super League season and was voted Liverpool’s player of the year. She already has 18 caps for Canada, having become her country’s youngest senior international at 15 in 2019. “It’s my dream to compete for the biggest titles in England and Europe,” she said in a statement released by Arsenal. European champions Arsenal are reinforcing after last season’s Champions League triumph, having also added England winger Chloe Kelly and left-back Taylor Hinds. Head coach Renee Slegers called Smith “an exciting young player whose ambition matches ours” as the club seeks to reclaim the WSL title from Chelsea.
