Police Scotland arrested three women aged 31, 34 and 42 after a van was rammed into the perimeter fence of Leonardo UK’s defence-electronics plant in Edinburgh early on 15 July. The force said the suspects were detained under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and that its Counter Terrorism Unit is leading the investigation. Images from the scene showed the vehicle lodged in the security barrier with a Palestinian flag draped over it. Activist network Shut Down Leonardo, linked to the recently proscribed group Palestine Action, said it organised the action to disrupt production of laser-targeting systems the factory supplies for Israel’s F-35 fighter jets. Police described the incident as targeted and said there was no wider threat to the public. Later on Tuesday, officers made at least five additional arrests in connection with the raid as enquiries continued. Leonardo, which employs about 1,800 people at the site, said it complies with UK export controls, supplies primarily to the UK armed forces and condemned “aggressive and violent” protest methods.
