U.S. Customs and Border Protection said four U.S. citizens were arrested on 8 July after they placed improvised tire-deflation devices in the path of Border Patrol vehicles during an immigration enforcement operation in Van Nuys, Los Angeles. One of the spikes punctured a patrol vehicle’s tire outside a Home Depot near Van Nuys Airport. The suspects—identified by Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino as Jenaro-Ernesto Ayala, 43; Jude Jasmine Jeannine Allard, 28; Sadot Jarnica, 54; and Daniel Montenegro, 30—face felony counts of obstructing federal officers. According to the Department of Homeland Security, one of the four also assaulted an agent while being taken into custody and faces an additional assault charge. Images released by the agency show short metal or rubber strips studded with large nails. DHS said the case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution and warned that interference with federal law-enforcement operations will continue to be met with arrest.
