TikTok has begun a fresh round of restructuring that will place several hundred content-moderation jobs in the United Kingdom at risk, according to an internal email first reported by the Financial Times. Staff in the company’s London-based trust-and-safety division were told their roles could be eliminated as the Chinese-owned platform consolidates moderation work in fewer hubs and relies more heavily on artificial-intelligence systems, including large language models, to screen videos for harmful material. The cuts coincide with the UK’s new Online Safety Act, which empowers regulators to levy penalties of up to £18 million or 10 percent of a company’s global turnover for breaches. TikTok already removes more than 85 percent of offending posts through automation, but unions and employee representatives warn that replacing human reviewers could increase the risk of dangerous content slipping through. “Hastily developed, immature AI alternatives put the safety of millions of users at risk,” said John Chadfield of the Communication Workers Union. Reductions in headcount are also expected in parts of South and South-East Asia as part of the same global overhaul. TikTok, which employs about 2,500 people in the UK, reported that its European revenue rose 38 percent to $6.3 billion in 2024 while operating losses narrowed to $485 million, underscoring the company’s push to trim costs even as the platform expands.
