Meta Platforms plans another shake-up of its artificial-intelligence operations, splitting Meta Superintelligence Labs into four units dedicated to core research, a frontier “superintelligence” project, product integration and infrastructure. The reorganisation, expected to be announced Tuesday, could trim headcount and prompt the departure of several AI executives, according to people familiar with the matter cited by the New York Times. An internal memo seen by multiple media outlets says Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang will run the new TBD Lab, while Robert Fergus will oversee the longstanding FAIR research group, former GitHub chief Nat Friedman will lead the products team and Aparna Ramani will manage infrastructure. Meta is also weighing the use of third-party AI models as it races to commercialise its technology. Days after the structural overhaul surfaced, the Wall Street Journal reported that Meta has frozen hiring across its AI division. The pause, which began last week and requires Wang’s approval for any exceptions, follows a months-long talent spree in which the company hired more than 50 researchers and engineers. A Meta spokesperson described the move as “basic organisational planning” tied to budgeting for the newly created units. The combination of downsizing, reorganisation and a hiring freeze marks a pivot from Meta’s recent open-ended spending on AI talent and infrastructure and underscores management’s effort to control costs while pursuing Zuckerberg’s goal of building systems that can achieve so-called superintelligence.
