Tunisian No. 59 Ons Jabeur, runner-up at Wimbledon in 2022 and 2023, retired from her opening-round match on Monday, sending Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova through while trailing 7-6 (5), 2-0 on Court 14. Jabeur, 30, called a medical timeout after five games and left the court in tears for about 14 minutes as medical staff checked her blood pressure and other vitals. She returned to play but conceded the first-set tiebreak and two further games before signalling she could not continue. The match unfolded during a London heatwave, with on-court temperatures near 29 °C and a tournament heat rule allowing extra breaks. The retirement marks Jabeur’s earliest exit at the All England Club since 2019 and prolongs her wait for a maiden Grand Slam title. World No. 111 Tomova advances to face either Britain’s Sonay Kartal or 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.
