The Charity Commission for England and Wales has issued a formal warning to Nottingham-based charity Nottingham Islam Information Point and disqualified trustee Harun Abdur Rashid Holmes from holding any senior role in a charity for three years. The regulator acted after reviewing video footage of a sermon Holmes delivered on 13 October 2023—six days after Hamas’s 7 October assault on Israel—in which he quoted scripture urging Muslims to kill Jews. The Commission described the remarks as “inflammatory and divisive” and said Holmes failed to provide adequate context, breaching his duties as a trustee. In addition to banning Holmes, the Commission said NIIP’s remaining trustees have strengthened governance, including tighter vetting of speakers. The case forms part of more than 300 regulatory investigations the watchdog has opened in the past 18 months linked to tensions arising from the Middle East conflict.
