UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has reported himself to the Environment Agency after admitting he fished without the legally required rod licence while hosting U.S. Vice President JD Vance at Chevening House last week. Lammy purchased the licence immediately after realising the oversight and informed the regulator of the lapse on 13 August. Anglers aged 13 or over must hold a valid Environment Agency rod licence when fishing for freshwater species in England and Wales. Breaches can attract fines of up to £2,500 and, in some cases, criminal records. The agency said it checks licences regularly but has not yet indicated whether Lammy will be prosecuted. The pair were photographed casting lines in Chevening’s private lake on 8 August before discussions that covered the Israel-Hamas conflict and Russia’s war in Ukraine. Vance later joked that, unlike his children, Lammy failed to land a fish. The licence lapse has since prompted criticism from political opponents in both countries but appears unlikely to disrupt the broader diplomatic agenda.
